When people think of yoyo, they picture children or teenagers. But some of our most dedicated students are in their 60s, 70s, and 80s. YYAS runs senior yoyo programmes at Active Ageing Centres across Singapore, and the results have surprised even us.
Yoyo is not a children's toy. It is a skill activity that adapts to any age. For seniors, it offers specific benefits that address the exact challenges of ageing: maintaining coordination, staying mentally sharp, and building social connections.
Why Yoyo Works for Seniors
Seniors need activities that are engaging without being physically risky. Yoyo fits perfectly because it is:
- Low impact: No running, no jumping, no strain on joints
- Seated-friendly: Can be practised sitting down
- Infinitely adjustable: Slower, simpler tricks work just as well as advanced ones
- Social: Group sessions create natural conversation and laughter
- Achievable: Seniors land their first trick within 30 minutes. That immediate win matters
Physical Benefits for Older Adults
Hand Dexterity and Fine Motor Control
As we age, fine motor skills decline. Fingers become less nimble. Grip strength weakens. Yoyo directly counteracts this. The repeated motion of throwing, catching, and controlling the yoyo exercises the exact muscles and tendons that need stimulation. Occupational therapists have noted that manipulative activities like yoyo help maintain the hand function needed for daily tasks: buttoning shirts, using utensils, writing.
Hand-Eye Coordination
Catching a moving object requires the brain to process visual information and send precise signals to the hands. This neural pathway is exactly what deteriorates with age if not exercised. Yoyo keeps it active in a way that is more engaging than standard physiotherapy exercises.
Shoulder and Arm Mobility
The throwing motion in yoyo is gentle and rhythmic. It maintains shoulder range of motion without the strain of lifting weights or repetitive gym exercises. Many seniors report that their shoulder stiffness improves after a few weeks of regular practice.
Cognitive Benefits
The cognitive benefits of yoyo for seniors are where it truly stands out:
- Working memory: Learning a sequence of tricks requires holding multiple steps in mind simultaneously
- Concentration: A single trick demands focus for 5 to 10 seconds. That sustained attention trains the brain to block distractions
- Problem solving: When a trick fails, the player must diagnose why and adjust. That analytical process keeps the mind agile
- Pattern recognition: Linking tricks into combinations builds the same neural pathways used in strategy games and puzzles
A 2018 study on manipulative skill activities in older adults found that participants who practised hand-eye coordination tasks twice weekly showed measurable improvements in executive function tests after 12 weeks. Yoyo provides exactly that kind of stimulation.
Social and Emotional Benefits
Loneliness is one of the most significant health risks for seniors in Singapore. Yoyo classes create natural social interaction in a low-pressure environment.
Unlike competitive activities where some participants dominate, yoyo is individual but communal. Everyone works on their own skill while sitting in a circle. Conversations flow easily. When someone lands a trick, the group celebrates. When someone struggles, others offer tips. The dynamic is supportive, not competitive.
We have seen friendships form between seniors who met in yoyo class and now practise together outside sessions. For individuals who live alone, that social anchor is invaluable.
What a Senior Yoyo Class Looks Like
YYAS senior programmes are designed specifically for older adults. Sessions typically run 45 to 60 minutes and include:
- Warm-up finger and wrist exercises
- Gentle throwing practice with responsive yoyos
- 2 to 3 simple tricks tailored to each participant's ability
- Group challenges and mini-performances
- Cool-down stretching
Equipment is adapted. We use larger, responsive yoyos that are easier to control. String length is adjusted for comfort. Seating is arranged so everyone has space and support if needed.
Real Stories from Our Classes
"I thought I was too old to learn anything new. But after three sessions I could do Walk the Dog. My grandchildren were shocked. Now I practise every morning." — Mdm. Tan, 72, Tampines AAC
"The class is the highlight of my week. Everyone is so encouraging. Even when I drop it 20 times, nobody judges. We just laugh and try again." — Mr. Lim, 68, Marine Parade AAC
